In specialized shipping business, experienced vessel crane operators play a critical role to control the quality andefficiencyof cargo loading and discharging. In order to improve the crane operator's ability to operate the crane,COSCO SHIPPING Specializedhas putforward the development of the simulation-based training system for vessel crane operation. Through the application of digital virtual technology, the indoor and outdoor viewsfrom the vessel's crane operating room are reproduced. Byusing the same manipulation and display equipment from vessel manufacturers, andsimulating noise of the crane running, the system re-producedconvincing operating environment.The system is integrated with the experience fromsenior vessel crane operators,so that the simulation is quite close to the real operation. Based on the procedure of the vessel crane operation, system has been developed with training and examination modules with question bank.The system provides the trainees with a systematic training ofsafety precautions, which significantly improves the effectiveness of the operation.

Thecrewonboardhasvery limited time to practicehisskill due to the following reason. The vessel crane cannot be operated during sailing. And the crane is mainly occupied for loading and unloading cargo in port. But there will be more effective by using the simulation-based training system. The one-week training course includes online operation up to50 hours.The operators can get rapid growth comparing to the actual practices onboard. Up to now, 10 training courses have been successfully carried out, and more than 60 trainees have been trained. The system has become the only widely appliedvessel crane training system in China.
