Brief Introduction to BRICS

In 2006, the foreign ministers of a group of emerging economies, comprising Brazil, Russia, India and China, held their first meeting on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, which was a prelude to the cooperation among BRIC. In June 2009, BRIC leaders convened the first summit in Yekaterinburg, Russia, thereby promoting BRIC cooperation to the summit level. In 2011, South Africa officially joined BRIC. Then “S” was formally added to BRIC after the admission of South Africa, which has been henceforth known as “BRICS”.

Since 2009, BRICS leaders have convened 14 summits and nine informal summits.
